Let’s talk about one of the most persistent myths surrounding anal pleasure
I’ve heard this question so many times that I feel like we need to talk about it.
If you’ve ever wondered whether enjoying pegging says something about your sexual orientation, you’re definitely not the only one.
So let me share what I’ve learned through my experience and my work in sexuality, and hopefully ease some of the anxiety around this question.
Does enjoying pegging mean you’re gay?
The short answer is no. Let’s talk about why.
When pleasure gets tangled with masculinity
For many men, the fear surrounding anal pleasure has less to do with anatomy and more to do with what they’ve learned about masculinity.
From an early age, men can receive messages that being dominant means being strong, while receiving, surrendering, or showing vulnerability means being weak.
Anal pleasure can challenge those ideas.
But receiving pleasure doesn’t make someone less masculine. And allowing yourself to be vulnerable with someone you trust doesn’t have to mean giving up your strength.
Sometimes, it can require a different kind of confidence.
Your anatomy doesn’t have an ideology
The anus is an erogenous zone with many sensitive nerve endings, and for people who have a prostate, prostate stimulation can also be pleasurable.
Your body can respond to stimulation regardless of the labels society has attached to it. Pleasure is a physical experience. What you enjoy doesn’t automatically define who you’re attracted to.
Pegging can be about much more than stimulation
For couples who choose to explore it, pegging can involve trust, communication, curiosity and vulnerability.
I’m not saying this only as a professional. I’m also saying it as a partner who has seen what can happen when someone feels safe enough to explore pleasure without worrying about how they’re “supposed” to experience it.
There can be something deeply intimate about being able to say:
I trust you enough to be vulnerable with you.
And that is why, for me, the first step into pegging isn’t technique.
It’s safety, communication and connection.
Pleasure doesn’t determine your orientation
If you’re curious about pegging or anal pleasure, you don’t need to use the experience as a test of your masculinity or sexual orientation.
You can simply be curious.
You can discover something you enjoy.
You can decide it isn’t for you.
And you can explore with a partner while maintaining exactly the same sexual orientation you had before.
Your body doesn’t need to prove anything.
Give yourself permission to understand it instead of judging it.
