A beginner-friendly guide to exploring anal pleasure and pegging,
on your own or with a partner, in a safe and pleasurable way
Anal sex is not just penetration
It’s any sexual practice that involves stimulation of the perianal area (perineum + anus), using fingers, tongue or toys with a stopper.
What makes a practice meaningful is not just technique, it’s how it makes you feel seen, understood and empowered in your own body. Anal stimulation can be intuitive, respectful, and connected with pleasure when you approach it with information, consent, and curiosity.
To start safely and enjoyably, there are 3 simple steps.
1. Internal Cleaning (optional)
Internal rectal cleaning is not necessary before anal play, but some people choose to do it to feel more relaxed and confident.
Anal shower:
2. Dilation (the key step)
The anus has two sphincters:
When the body isn’t used to internal stimulation, the internal sphincter may contract automatically. That’s why relaxation and dilation must come before penetration.
What helps:
How to start:
Begin by touching the perianal area and the edges of the anus.
Smile, breathe and relax.
Gently insert the first phalanx of your finger and pause.
If the anus contracts, take a few seconds to relax before continuing.
When ready, move slowly to the second phalanx.
Insert the whole finger only if it feels comfortable, and stay still for a few seconds.
This first experience is about familiarization, not performance.
It’s normal if it feels uncomfortable or if you don’t feel arousal or orgasm at first.
Dilation is not about forcing. It’s about teaching the body to relax.

3. Penetration (In-and-out movement)
If you’re exploring with a partner, communication is essential. Let them know what feels good, when you want to slow down, pause or stop, and whether you want to continue. The receiving partner should be able to guide the depth and pace throughout the experience.
Position can also make a difference. For partnered play, starting at the edge of the bed can make it easier for the receiving partner to relax while giving the other partner good control over the pace and movement.
If you’re exploring on your own, the shower can be a comfortable and private place to experiment. A suction-cup toy can also allow you to control your own pace and movement while paying attention to what feels comfortable for your body.
